CAT Verbal Ability Syllabus

VARC section of CAT is divided into 2 parts. The first part covers questions based on Reading Comprehension passages and the second part is based on questions on different topics on Verbal Ability.

Out of total 34 questions, there are 24 MCQs and 10 Non-MCQs in VARC section of CAT.

Reading Comprehension

There are total 5 RC passages with 24 questions. About 3 are long passages (900 words) and 2 are short passages (600 words). Long passages have 6 questions and short passages have 3 questions each. All the questions are of MCQ type.

Topics on which RC passages are based include current affairs, social and economic issues, literature, science & culture; abstract, history and fiction. Questions are based on information given in the RC passage.

Verbal Ability

Verbal Ability (VA) section has 10 questions. All the questions are of non-MCQ type with no penalty for wrong answer.

Topics on which VA questions are based:

  1. Para-Jumble
  2. Para-Summary: Essence of short paragraph
  3. Odd-Sentence Out
  4. Sentence Completion and Correction
  5. Word Usage (Vocabulary)
  6. Fill in the Blanks
