Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM) was set up as the first school of management within the IIT system in 1993 at a time when India had just opened its doors to economic liberalization. The school was established with an aim to develop managers with a strong technological background who would lead tomorrow’s corporate behemoths on the path of success. The concept was to start a business school along the lines of Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, that is, a business school within a renowned technical institute.
Programmes at VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur
Master of Business Administration (MBA), the flagship programme of the Institute is a full-time four-semester (2 year) residential programme for graduate engineers and Masters' degree holders in science, economics and commerce, intending to pursue management careers in India and abroad.
Recognizing this need, over the years VGSoM moved beyond the sphere of the regular MBA programme. In 2010, the school initiated a unique 3 year programme (spread over 12 trimesters) for working executives, termed aptly as the Executive MBA Program or EMBA. This program is conducted in the IIT Kharagpur campuses in Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. Students enrolled in this programme earn the degree of Master of Business Administration from IIT Kharagpur.
The School offers an advanced programme in management leading to the award of a Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. The programme requires each candidate to take courses recommended by the Doctoral Scrutiny Committee in the first and second semesters after they join the programme. This is followed by a rigorous comprehensive examination that tests their ability to integrate various areas of management, and their readiness for independent research. Upon successful completion of the comprehensive examination, the candidates propose a topic for the research project they plan to undertake.
